Solucionando o Mistério do Vôo da Libélula

ENGLISH POSTUGUÊS

Date: September 27, 2007 Solving A Dragonfly Flight Mystery

Science Daily - Dragonflies adjust their wing motion while hovering to conserve energy, according to a Cornell University study of the insect's flight mechanics. The revelation contradicts previous speculation that the change in wing motion served to enhance vertical lift.

Dragonflies have two pairs of wings, which sometimes move up and down in harmony. At other times the front set of wings flap out of sync with the back set.

The Cornell physicists came to their conclusions after analyzing high speed images of dragonflies in action.

The physicists found that dragonflies maximized their lift, when accelerating or taking off from a perch, by flapping both sets of wings together. When they hover, however, the rear wings flap at the same rate as the front, but with a different phase (imagine two people clapping at the same speed, but with one person's clap delayed relative to the other).

The physicists' analysis of the out-of-sync motion showed that while it didn't help with lift, it minimized the amount of power they had to expend to stay airborne, allowing them to conserve energy while hovering in place.

The research will be detailed in a forthcoming issue of Physical Review Letters. The authors are Z. Jane Wang and David Russell.

Airbus 320 - RESOLUTION no TCAS - vôo TAM

FCOM Airbus 320

The TCAS (Traffic alert and Collision Avoidance System) :

Detects any aircraft, equipped with transponders, flying in its vicinity; Displays potential and predicted collision targets; Issues vertical orders to avoid conflict.

The TCAS is normally independent of the ground-based air traffic control system.

The TCAS detection capability is limited to intruders flying within a maximum range of
30-40 NM (depending on aircraft configuration and external conditions), and within a maximum altitude range of 9900 feet (above and below the threatened aircraft).

MAIN COMPONENTS

The system includes :
- a single channel TCAS computer two TCAS antennas two mode S ATC transponders, one active the other in standby.

These transponders allow :
- interface between the ATC / TCAS control panel and the TCAS computer communication between the aircraft and intruders equipped with a TCAS system an ATC /TCAS control panel.

PRINCIPLE

The TCAS interrogates transponder of intruders. From the transponder replies, the TCAS determines for each intruder :
- its relative bearing its range and closure rate

- its relative altitude if available (ATC mode C or S)

Then the TCAS computes the intruder trajectory, the Closest Point of Approach (CPA) and the estimated time (TAU) before reaching the CPA.

Each time the relative position of the intruder presents a collision threat, aural and visual advisories are triggered.

TCAS optimizes vertical orders to ensure a sufficient trajectory separation and a minimal vertical speed variation considering all intruders.

INTRUDER CLASSIFICATION

The intruders are classified in four levels :

TCAS MODES
The TCAS has 2 modes of operation :

- TA/RA: This mode allows the display of all intruders.

- TA: Can be selected by : the crew, on the ATC/TCAS panel, in case of aircraft degraded performance (engine failure, landing gear extended) or when operating near closely spaced parallel runways, or automatically, when the following messages are triggered :

- windshear (aural alert) stall

- GPWS messages Consequently :

- all RA are inhibited and converted into TA

TA threshold is set to TAU <= 20 seconds independent of aircraft altitude. No vertical speed advisories are indicated on the PFDs

- TA ONLY is displayed on the NDs If windshear, stall or GPWS messages are triggered, all the TCAS aural messages are suppressed.

ADVISORY INHIBITION
Some advisories are inhibited depending on the aircraft altitude:
- all intruders flying below 380 feet AGL when the own aircraft altitude is below 1700 feet AGL.
- all TA aural messages and all RAs below 1100 feet in climb and 900 feet in descent. In this case, the RAs are converted into TAs. "Descend" type advisory below 1200 feet AGL at takeoff or 1000 feet AGL in approach. "Increase Descent" RA below 1450 feet.

ND INDICATIONS (ND=Navigation Display)
The traffic is displayed in all ROSE modes and ARC mode when 10, 20 or 40 NM range is selected.

Only the 8 most threatening intruders are displayed. Veja Imagem.

TCAS MESSAGES

1 Mode and range messages

Following messages can be displayed to draw pilot's attention :

TCAS : REDUCE RANGE:

displayed when a TA or RA is detected and ND range above 40 NM

TCAS : CHANGE MODE :

displayed when a TA or RA is detected and ND mode is PLAN. Displayed amber or red depending on the advisory level (TA or RA).Flash 9 seconds then remain steady.

2 TCAS operation messages

- TCAS: displayed red in case of TCAS internal failure.Flashes 9 seconds then remains steady.

- TA ONLY : displayed white when selected by the crew.

PFD INDICATIONS (PFD=Primary Flight Display)

In case of RA detection, the PFD presents vertical orders on the vertical speed scale. The vertical speed scale background is normally grey, but may be partially replaced by green and/or red areas.

1 Red area Indicates the vertical speed range, where the risk of conflict is high.

2 Green area Indicates the recommended vertical speed range.

Note :
The aircraft can also fly in the grey vertical speed range without the risk of conflict (preventive RA).

The color of the vertical speed needle and the digits corresponds to the appropriate area.

3 TCAS message

- Appears in red when TCAS cannot deliver RA data, or in case of TCAS internal failure.

AURAL MESSAGES

TA/RA detection is associated with the following messages :

TRAFFIC TRAFFIC: only in case of TA detection.

CLIMB CLIMB CLIMB : climb at the vertical speed indicated by the green area on PFD.

CLIMB CROSSING CLIMB (twice) : same as above. Indicates that you will cross through the intruder altitude.

INCREASE CLIMB (twice) : triggered after CLIMB message if vertical speed not sufficient to achieve safe vertical separation.

REDUCE CLIMB (twice): reduce vertical speed to that indicated on PFD green area.

DESCEND DESCEND DESCEND: descend at the vertical speed indicated by the green area on PFD.

DESCEND CROSSING DESCEND (twice): same as above. Indicates that you will cross through the intruder altitude.

INCREASE DESCEND (twice): triggered after DESCEND message if vertical speed not sufficient to achieve safe vertical separation.

REDUCE DESCEND (twice): reduce vertical speed to that indicated on the PFD green area.

CLIMB CLIMB NOW (twice): triggered after DESCEND message if the intruder trajectory has changed.

DESCEND DESCEND NOW (twice): triggered after CLIMB message if the intruder trajectory has changed.

MONITOR VERTICAL SPEED (twice): ensure that vertical speed remains outside the red area.Triggered only when leaving a previous RA.

CLEAR OF CONFLICT: range is increasing and separation is adequate.Return to assigned clearance.

Gravel Runway Operation Video (16 MB WMV) in Brazil

ENGLISH PORTUGUÊS

Nosewheel Spin-Up System

An optional gravel runway system is available to reduce gravel spray at nosewheel touchdown.

The nosewheel spin-up is initiated by positioning the W/S BLEED air switch to either the LOW or the HI position, the WINDSHIELD BLEED AIR valve controls to OFF, and the NOSE WHEEL SPIN-UP control to ON.
This directs engine bleed air to the system for wheel spin-up. Within 90 seconds, the N/W RPM indicator should illuminate green as wheel speed increases into the 1.600 to 2.400 rpm range.
Gravel sprays and possible engine ingestion occur because of the nosewheel touchdown is without rotation.
On touchdown without nosewheel rotation, gravel can be flung backward.

Environmental Systems
by Fredrick G. Pappas Jr.

What it is

Families have generic traits that are passed from generation to generation. Some of us are born with large noses, crooked toes or thick ankles. aircraft share genetic traits.

Next to engines, the Environmental System is probably the most important system on the aircraft. The system is so reliable that most pilots take it for granted. They never take the time to learn why the system is important or how it works.

The environmental system is important for two reasons. First, it provides us with the means to control the temperature or air inside the aircraft. Second, it provides us with a simple and efficiente pressurization system.

Why we need it

Most pilots have a pretty good ideia as to why they need pressurization. But they may not fully appreciate the importance of temperature control.

Soppouse that while you are reading this, someone turned down the thermostat in the room to 20 degrees Below zero. No problem. You continue to read. But as the temperature falls it becomes more difficult to concentrate. As it becomes colder and colder your attention span becomes shorter. That's because the part of your brain that normally takes care of temperature control can no longer do its job. This part of the brain needs help. So you interrupt your reading to find a sweater or coat.

The same thing can happen in the aircraft. If you are too cold ou too hot you cann't concentrate on flying. Full concentration is essential for safe flying. Temperature control is important.

Pressurization is important too. Many pilots have misconceptions about pressurization. One wrong ideia is that we must have pressurization to breathe. WRONG! You can breath at 41.000 feet without pressurization.
Another misconception is that there is no oxigen at high altitudes. WRONG again! The percentage of oxigen in the air at 41.000 feet is about the same as it is at sea level.

So, if there's oxigen at 41.000 feet and if we can breathe, why do we need pressure?

We need pressure is to "push" the Oxigen into our blood. Without the pressure to provide the "push", we could not survive even in a 100% oxigen environment.

The percentage of Oxygen in the atmosphere remains exactly the same at all heights up to about 85 km. It is just over 21% by volume (just under 23% by mass) whether we measure it at sea level, or at the top of mont Everest.

Percent composition of the atmosphere remains constant but pressure decreases with altitude.

ADS-B - Pilotos estejam preparados

FAA to Pilots:

be ready for ADS-B by 2020

The FAA said on Tuesday it wants all aircraft flying in controlled airspace to have satellite-based avionics by 2020, so air traffic controllers can track them using Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B). Dhe agency issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking that says the equipment will allow controllers to handle more traffic more safely with less separation.

"Aviation must take the big step into the next generation of technology," said Acting FAA Administrator Bobby Sturgell. "It's safer and more accurate. Satellite technology is here to stay." Pilots with ADS-B cockpit displays can see, in real time, their location in relation to other aircraft, bad weather and terrain. In Southwest Alaska, the fatal accident rate for ADS-B-equipped aircraft has dropped by 47 percent, the FAA said. Aircraft that don't fly in controlled airspace will not be required to have ADS-B avionics, the FAA said.

A contract awarded to ITT Corp. last month, ground stations for the new system will be brought on line across the country, starting in the East Coast, portions of the Midwest, Alaska and the Gulf of Mexico. Nationwide coverage is expected by 2013. The proposed rule is open to public comment for 90 days, and is scheduled to become final by late 2009. The FAA demonstrated the ADS-B system at EAA Airventure in Oshkosh this summer.
